CR takes me to task for saying that Melvyn Bragg has a Geordie accent, when he was born in Carlisle and educated in Cumbria on the west coast. Mea culpa...
All I can say in defence, is that to me as a Southerner, his accent sounds like 'educated' Geordie, and I do remember him passionately defending the north-east engineers of the early nineteenth century in a programme about the Industrial Revolution.
